This month’s tour includes two green-built homes and the Laughing Waters
community building at Hickory Nut Forest, an eco-community where greenbuilding
and other sustainable practices are the norm. Located in an area of
cascading streams, forests, and cliffs in Gerton, the community combines
land conservation with low-impact, holistic living.
Energy-efficiency, wise-material use, and organic gardens are showcased,
along with renewable energy systems. The home that Ryan Lubbers’ and
Lynn Vogelman built features passive solar design, as well as solar thermal
and electric systems, while Lynn Pall and Doug Allen’s home features a
Trombe wall for solar heating. Also, a micro-hydro system generates electric
power for Laughing Waters, helping the community to achieve its goal
of becoming “net zero” in overall energy. COST: FREE!
